If the signs are styles, the planets are the cast: the actual characters moving across your chart, each with a job to do.
Ten bodies do the acting in astrology (the Sun and Moon are counted as “planets” here, for short). Each one governs a slice of who you are.
- Sun: identity and vitality, the core self and its direction.
- Moon: emotions, needs and instinct, what makes you feel safe.
- Mercury: mind and voice, how you think and speak.
- Venus: love and values, what you’re drawn to.
- Mars: drive and desire, how you act and assert.
- Jupiter: growth and luck, where life expands.
- Saturn: limits and discipline, where life asks for structure.
- Uranus: disruption and freedom, sudden change.
- Neptune: dreams, imagination, longing.
- Pluto: power, depth, transformation.
Inner, social, outer
The closer-in planets, Sun through Mars, move quickly and feel personal; they’re you. Jupiter and Saturn set the social rhythm of a life. The outer three (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) crawl so slowly they colour a whole generation at a time.
How planets talk: aspects
Planets don’t act alone. The angle between two of them, measured in degrees around the circle, is called an aspect, and it describes how those two parts of you get along. Drag the two planets below and watch the aspects light up:
- Conjunction (0°): fused and intensified, so they act as one.
- Sextile (60°): an easy opportunity, if you reach for it.
- Square (90°): productive friction that pushes growth (never doom).
- Trine (120°): natural flow and talent that comes easily.
- Opposition (180°): a polarity you learn to balance.
Why this is what ‘today’ really means
Right now, the real planets are still moving, and the angles they make to your birth planets are what a good daily reading is built from. That’s a transit: today’s sky, touching your chart.
